1 Dead, 1 Injured in Two Weekend Hiking Incidents

Two hiking incidents, one fatal, occurred over the weekend. An injured hiker was rescued on Friday from the Cucamonga Trail on Mt. Baldy. The hiker, 59-year-old Cynthia Cork of Newport, called for help around 12:30 p.m. after she slipped on the trail and injured her ankle. An air rescue team from Fontana responded and Cork was hoisted into the helicopter. She was taken to Cow Canyon Saddle, where she was met by medical personnel.

One other hiker was not so fortunate this weekend. Pi-Wei Hung, a 40-year-old Las Vegas woman, was reported missing Saturday at 1:10 p.m. She was allegedly driving from Las Vegas, Nevada to Fort Irwin, California, and had stopped in the Charleston View area of Inyo County. Hung’s vehicle was found on Sunday at Old Spanish Trail near Baker. Her body was found at 4:57 p.m. about 5 miles away from the vehicle. She died of heat exposure.

These hiking incidents come just shortly after reports of a hiker dying at Joshua Tree National Park, and another missing person’s body discovered on a hiking trail. Unfortunately, these incidents are common occurrences in the desert during the summer months.

“There is just no reason to be out hiking alone on these dangerous trails. If you decide to go hiking, don’t attempt any trail alone, even if you’re familiar with it,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
