4 Injured in Fiery Charter Bus Crash on I-10

A fiery charter bus crash injured four people on I-10 Wednesday. Police say a charter bus carrying cheerleaders collided with a big rig on eastbound I-10 near the Cactus City rest stop. The bus driver was slowing down in the No. 1 lane as he approached stopped traffic. At the same time, the driver of a Volvo semi with two trailers hit the brakes to stop. However, the truck was traveling too fast to stop in time. The truck driver swerved left to avoid crashing into the stopped traffic. Instead, the big rig struck the rear of the charter bus.

Both vehicles came to a stop in the center divider. The big rig then burst into flames. Fortunately, the truck driver managed to escape from the big rig. The fiery charter bus collision occurred around 4:15 p.m.

The bus driver, Manuel Valdivia of Phoenix, was among the injured. Three cheerleaders also suffered moderate injuries in the accident. The truck driver, identified as Rene Aragon of Fontana, was not hurt in the crash.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers say the charter bus was on the way home to Arizona from a UCLA cheerleading camp. The bus was carrying roughly 30 bus passengers.

The CHP reports that the truck belongs to Old Dominion Freight Line based in Thomasville, North Carolina. The company has a satisfactory safety rating, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). However, their vehicles have been involved in more than 630 crashes in the past two years, 19 of those being fatal.

“Our thoughts are with everyone who was hurt in this crash. We’re thankful to hear there were no fatalities,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
