Driver Using Snapchat Speed Filter Faces Criminal Charges

The driver accused of using the Snapchat speed filter before causing a serious crash is now facing criminal charges on top of a personal injury lawsuit. Christal McGee, 19, was allegedly driving 107 mph when she crashed into Uber driver Wentworth Maynard’s vehicle on a rainy night last September. Maynard was hospitalized for 5 weeks for a brain injury. He can no longer work and struggles to take car of himself.

On Wednesday, a county judge in Georgia signed arrest warrants for McGee. She has been charged with felony serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving and driving too fast for conditions. McGee’s passengers at the time of the crash have confirmed that she was driving more than 100 mph and using the Snapchat speed filter before the wreck.

With all the technology at our fingertips, distracted driving comes in many forms. To avoid a distracted driving accident, follow these 5 rules:

  1. Make necessary adjustments before you begin driving. Plug in your destination to your GPS, adjust your mirrors, and get comfortable in your seat before you take off so you don’t need to forfeit focus on the road to make adjustments.
  2. Finish all your personal grooming before you get behind the wheel.
  3. Put your electronic devices away. If having your phone in the front seat is too tempting, keep it in the backseat out of your reach.
  4. Secure children and pets before starting your trip.
  5. If you absolutely have to take a call or take care of some other issue that demands your attention, pull off the road in a safe place before doing so.
