General Motors (GM) has issued a recall of more than 1 million vehicles for a power steering defect that can lead to accidents. The automaker has reported 30 crashes and two injuries related to the issue.
According to GM’s report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the vehicles affected may experience a temporary loss of power steering, followed by a sudden return of the function. The defect is especially prevalent during “low-speed turning maneuvers.” GM says the loss of power is caused by an electrical/software issue. Drivers experiencing the malfunction may have difficult steering the vehicle, which can result in a crash.
Vehicles included in the recall are certain 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC 1500 pickup trucks, 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban SUVs, GMC Yukon SUVs, and Cadillac Escalade SUVs.
The recall follows a safety investigation conducted by GM in June. Customers will be notified soon if their vehicle is affected, and dealers will perform a software fix to repair the defect.
“As this defect has already been linked to 30 reported crashes, vehicle owners should take this recall seriously and have their vehicles repaired as soon as possible,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
