Police arrested a La Quinta man for causing a DUI crash early Saturday morning. Police say 30-year-old Juan Escobedo crashed into a parked car near Avenida Montezuma and Calle Sonora. The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m.
The driver sustained minor injuries in the accident. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities later arrested Escobedo for driving under the influence. They then booked the DUI suspect at Riverside County Jail in Indio.
Someone is injured in a drunk driving crash every two minutes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). And everyday, 27 people die in drunk driving crashes. Many times these crashes are far from the first time the driver has gotten behind the wheel drunk. In fact, the average drunk driver has driven drunk more than 80 times before his or her first arrest.
How Can You Help Keep Drunk Drivers off the Road?
Reporting suspected drunk drivers is a great way to help motorists law enforcement catch these offenders before they hurt anyone. If you suspect someone is driving drunk, follow these steps to report them:
- Call 911 and ask to report a drunk driver. You can choose to remain anonymous if you wish.
- Give the operator a thorough description of the vehicle. Try to include color, make and model, and license plate if possible.
- Provide the exact location of the vehicle.
- Describe the driver’s behavior. For example, are they swerving in and out of their lane, speeding or braking erratically?
- Keep a safe distance from the vehicle and do not attempt to stop the driver yourself.
“Drunk driving continues to present a huge public safety problem on our roadways. Diligently reporting suspected drunk drivers can help save lives,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
