Police rescued a stranded hiker from a mountain trail in Palm Springs during last week’s rainstorm. The hiker called for assistance at 12:28 a.m. The Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue team responded to the scene, but they were unable to reach the hiker due to the heavy rainfall that had created dangerous floodwaters in the mountains.
At first light, authorities requested a California Highway Patrol (CHP) helicopter to retrieve the stranded hiker. Medical personnel at the landing zone determined the hiker had developed hyperthermia. He was transferred to a local hospital for treatment.
Hiking in Inclement Weather is Dangerous
Hiking in Palm Springs comes with risks even in good weather. The heavy rain, winds and cold weather that swept through the area last week made the terrain even more dangerous. Hikers should always avoid taking on the mountains until after the weather has cleared. When the weather is once again appropriate for hiking, make sure to read over our 8 hiking safety tips.
“We’re grateful to the responsive teams who rescued this stranded hiker. Hikers should never attempt the trails during dangerous weather,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
