An Apple Valley man was injured when a vape pen exploded in his face in June. Firefighters responded to the incident around 1:00 p.m. at the 14800 block of Tonikan Road. Authorities say the 40-year-old sustained facial injuries from the vape pen explosion.
The victim allegedly told the dispatcher that the device blew up while he was smoking it. He was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there were 15 reported e-cigarette fires and explosions in 2015. Twelve of these incidents resulted in injuries requiring medical attention. With the increasing popularity of vaping products, reports of these incidents are becoming even more frequent. Apple Valley Sheriff’s Sgt. Marc Bracco says a call like this happens as often as once a week in the High Desert.
“Reports of vaping products exploding or catching fire are happening too frequently for manufacturers to ignore,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
