Can Concussions Cause Alzheimer’s Disease?

A new study reveals a new danger of concussions: a clear link between concussions and the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

The study was conducted by the Boston University School of Medicine on 160 Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. Some of the veterans had experienced one or more concussions, while others had never had a concussion. Researchers used MRI imaging to measure the seven regions of the brain that are the first to show atrophy in Alzheimer’s patients.

The study showed that concussions were linked to lower thickness of the cerebral cortex in the regions associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers determined that when combined with genetic factors, concussions can increase a person’s risk for developing Alzheimer’s.

The study comes at a time when sports leagues, particularly the National Football League, have come under scrutiny for high rates of concussions in their athletes.

“This research is important in helping us understand the risk factors for Alzheimer’s, as well as in determining how we can help those at risk,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
