A driver was killed in a head-on crash in San Jacinto Wednesday night. Police say 55-year-old Cathedral City man Humberto Olvera died at the scene of the crash on Soboba Road near Chaleba Drive. The accident happened around 5:05 p.m.

Firefighters had to rescue both drivers from the wreck. Both drivers were allegedly trapped in their vehicles, and one of the vehicles crashed into a tree. Olvera was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, an SUV, was hospitalized for minor injuries. The fatal crash happened just east of The Country Club at Soboba Springs.

Police are still investigating the head-on crash. It is not yet clear what caused the crash. Anyone with information about the accident can contact the California Highway Patrol (CHP) at (951) 769-2000.

Although head-on collisions only account for 2% of all crashes, they account for more than 10% of fatal crashes. According to the Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS), 75% of head-on crashes occur on undivided two-lane roads. A majority of head-on collisions also happen on rural roads.

“Head-on crashes are some of the most deadly accidents. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
