A pedestrian was seriously injured in a collision in Palm Springs Monday night. The crash happened around 6 p.m. near the intersection of S. Sunrise Way and E. San Rafael Drive. A witness says the pedestrian, a middle-aged man, was crossing Sunrise Way when he was struck by a northbound Scion XB.

The pedestrian was hospitalized with serious injuries. The Scion sustained damage to the driver’s side mirror and windshield, but the driver does not appear to have been injured. Police are still investigating the crash, and it is unclear yet whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision. Sunrise Way was shut down for about two hours for the investigation.

The past year has been a dangerous one for pedestrians in the Coachella Valley. Pedestrian fatalities reached a 12-year high in 2016. According to The Desert Sun, Palm Springs had the highest pedestrian fatality rate in the Coachella Valley during the study period from 2008 to 2014. There were 6.16 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 people during that timeframe.

“We all need to work together to make our roads safer for pedestrians. Let’s hope this year we can break this deadly upward trend in pedestrian fatalities,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
