Dehydrated Hiker Rescued in Deep Creek

Emergency responders rescued a dehydrated hiker from Deep Creek in Apple Valley Saturday evening. According to San Bernardino County Fire, a 16-year-old girl was hiking with friends when she had to stop walking due to exhaustion and dehydration. Her friends called 911, and County Fire responded to their location.

Firefighters requested an airship to hoist the dehydrated hiker from the trail. The helicopter arrived around 5 p.m. and airlifted the hiker to an ambulance that was waiting nearby. Officials said the victim did not have any life-threatening injuries.

How to Prevent Dehydration when Hiking

Dehydration is a common issue encountered by desert hikers. With the hot, dry weather and challenging terrain, dehydration can happen rather quickly. Here are 4 ways to prevent dehydration when you hike:

  1. Slowly drink water over several hours before the hike.
  2. Eat a salty snack like trail mix to replenish the salt your body will lose through sweating.
  3. Keep sports drinks on hand as well to give your body a boost of electrolytes, which help keep you hydrated.
  4. Be aware of dehydration symptoms and take action quickly if you notice them. These symptoms include headache, lack of appetite, nausea, dizziness and dark-colored urine.

“We’re glad this young lady is going to be okay. Please be well-prepared and cautious when taking to the trails. It might not be sweltering outside yet, but dehydration is still a real danger,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
