Did Driver in Fatal 3-Vehicle Crash Check Twice for Motorcyclist?

An Oak Hills man was killed in a three-vehicle crash in Hesperia Monday night. Police have identified 44-year-old Jason Shirley as the motorcyclist who suffered fatal injuries in the accident.

Around 6:30 p.m., the driver of a Honda Pilot heading west on Phelan Road attempted a lefthand turn onto Fremontia Road. At the same time, Shirley was riding his motorcycle east on Phelan at about 55 mph. The driver of the SUV failed to yield to the motorcycle, and the motorcycle struck the SUV. Shirley was thrown from the motorcycle into the westbound lane, where he was struck by a Ford pickup truck.

Shirley was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:45 p.m. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers reported that Shirley was wearing a full face helmet approved by the Department of Transportation. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the three-vehicle crash, which remains under CHP investigation.

“Crashes like these are exactly why we say to ‘look twice for motorcyclists.’ Drivers need to share the road with motorcyclists to stop these tragedies from happening,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
