Driver with no Auto Insurance Crashes Into Utility Pole in Hesperia

The driver who lost control of his BMW and crashed into a utility pole in Hesperia last month was not carrying auto insurance on his vehicle. The crash happened just before 11 p.m. on southbound Escondido Avenue near Cedar Street when a 2006 BMW veered off the road into the dirt shoulder. The vehicle then swerved to the opposite side of the road, crashed into a brick wall and snapped a utility pole.

The driver, a male from San Jose, was not injured in the crash. However, another vehicle ran over the crash debris and sustained a flat tire. That vehicle was en route to the hospital, and an ambulance had to be called to take the passenger the rest of the way.

Police say a tire blowout caused the BMW driver to lose control of his vehicle. The driver stated that he was not carrying insurance on the vehicle, which was totaled in the crash. Police do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.

California requires vehicles to carry auto insurance.

California drivers are required to carry a minimum coverage of $15,000 per person/$30,000 per accident for Bodily Injury Liability, $5,000 for Property Damage Liability, $15,000 per person/$30,000 per accident for Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury, and $3,500 for Uninsured Motorist Property Damage.

Motorists can be penalized with a fine upwards of $1,000 or having their vehicle impounded for driving without insurance. Additionally, drivers who do not carry insurance may also be financially responsible for any damage caused if they are involved in an accident.

“With the holidays, many drivers are taking to the roads more frequently. Now is a good time to make sure you have at least the minimum required coverage on your vehicle so that you aren’t stuck with a huge financial burden should you be involved in a crash,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
