Fatal Pedestrian Crashes Account for 15% of Traffic Deaths

One pedestrian was killed and another was injured in two pedestrian crashes last week. On Tuesday, a 29-year-old man was struck after he allegedly jumped in front of a vehicle in Victorville.

Officers responded to the crash at Roy Rogers Drive and Civic Drive around 10:15 p.m. The pedestrian was a transient who frequents the local AmPm, according to witnesses. He was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center for his injuries. It is still unclear why the man jumped out in front of the vehicle. The driver, a 42-year-old Victorville man, was not injured.

The second pedestrian crash occurred Wednesday in Desert Hot Springs. The fatal crash happened at Indian Canyon Drive and Thomas Avenue around 8:05 p.m. The victim has not yet been identified. Indian Canyon was closed south of Thomas Avenue for two hours after the crash.

Fatal pedestrian crashes are unfortunately on the rise across the country. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), the number of fatal pedestrian traffic accidents is expected to have risen by as much as 10% from 2014 to 2015, once the final statistics are made available. This would be the largest increase recorded since this data was first recorded in 1975. Pedestrians also now account for a larger percentage of motor vehicle crash-related deaths: 15%, up from 11% a decade ago.

“Sadly, roads across the country are becoming more dangerous for pedestrians. Officials must continue to make pedestrian safety a top priority,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
