Hit-and-Runs Make Up 11% of Reported Crashes Annually

Two men were detained in connection with a Palm Desert hit-and-run Friday. Police responded to a crash near Fred Waring Drive and Tennessee Avenue around 1:35 p.m. When officers arrived they found one driver who had suffered minor injuries. The man was treated at the scene and released.

The driver of the other vehicle and his passenger fled the scene before police arrived. They were located near Washington Street and Hovley Lane. Police detained both men for questioning. The hit-and-run remains under investigation.

Leaving the scene of a crash is a crime that can carry serious punishments, including jail time. Despite the potential consequences, hit and run crashes continue to rise. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, approximately 11% of all crashes reported to police involve a hit-and-run driver, and nearly 1,500 people die in hit-and-run crashes every year.

“We’re glad Riverside County police were able to catch the suspects. Drivers need to understand that leaving the scene of an accident is a crime that our police officers take seriously,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
