Did you Know it is National Teen Driver Safety Week?

This week is National Teen Driver Safety Week—a time to discuss safe driving with your kids and bring awareness to the dangers of teen driving accidents. Motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of death for teens ages 15-19 in the U.S. In 2014, 2,679 teens were involved in fatal traffic accidents, and 123,000 teens were injured in crashes. Speeding was the cause in 30% of those crashes.

National Teen Driver Safety Week was established by Congress in 2007 as a way to bring attention to issues that affect teen drivers, like distracted driving. According to AAA, the biggest factors for teenage car accidents are speeding, distraction and parents not preparing their teenagers for the hazards of the road. Research by AAA shows that parents simply are not preparing the young drivers in their homes the way they did 10 years ago.

Seat belt use is another crucial aspect of teen driver safety. About 80% of crashes involving a teen driver included an occupant who was not wearing a seat belt.

“Parents, please do your due diligence to prepare your children for the realities of driving. Teens are some of the most likely drivers to get into accidents. They need strong safe driving advocates to keep them on the right track,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
