Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash After Fleeing Traffic Stop

An Apple Valley man was killed in a motorcycle crash last week at the intersection of Bear Valley and Apple Valley roads. The motorcyclist crashed into a van around 6:23 p.m. after leading an Apple Valley sheriff’s deputy on a pursuit. Police say the deputy had tried to pull the motorcyclist over on Snapping Turtle and Pah-Ute Road for speeding. The motorcyclist took off at high speed, heading west on Bear Valley Road until he slammed into an eastbound van. He was rushed to St. Joseph Health, St. Mary, where he died from his injuries.

Although motorcycles make up only 3% of all registered vehicles in the U.S., the fatality rate for motorcyclists was 6 times that of passenger car occupants, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 2013 statistics.

Speeding is often a factor in fatal motorcycle crashes. In 2013, 34% of motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes were racing, exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for conditions. Compared with 21% for passenger car drivers and 18% for truck drivers, it’s obvious that speeding while riding a motorcycle poses a serious risk.

“Motorcyclists are significantly more at risk for fatal accidents while speeding than other drivers. If you ride a motorcycle, protect yourself by following the speed limit,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
