Michigan State University Agrees to Settle Larry Nassar Lawsuit for $500 Million

Michigan State University has tentatively agreed to a $500 million settlement for the victims of former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. The school will pay out $425 million to 332 victims represented in the lawsuit. The other $75 million will be set aside in a trust fund designated for future plaintiffs who may come forward.

The university is not the only institution on the receiving end of lawsuits related to the Nassar sexual abuse scandal. USA Gymnastics, the US Olympic Committee, and several gymnastics coaches and trainers are also named as defendants for covering up the abuse or failing to properly investigate claims. Earlier this year, the U.S. Olympic Committee mandated that the USA Gymnastics board of directors resign, if the organization wanted to remain in place as the governing body for gymnastics.

Nassar was sentenced to up to 175 years in prison for criminal sexual misconduct. Victims accused the doctor of sexually abusing them under the guise of medical treatment.

“Hundreds of young women were violated over decades by this predator, and it appears the fallout for those who allowed it to continue is just beginning,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
