A Michigan jury awarded a moped driver $2.9 million for injuries he suffered after he struck a low-hanging AT&T wire. The Washtenew County jury found AT&T responsible for Kevin Michaels’ crash, which resulted in multiple injuries including a fracture skull and hearing loss.

According to the lawsuit, the wire was replaced in July 2016 after being damaged by a truck. Michaels’ moped accident occurred on Aug. 24, 2016. The jury determined that AT&T was negligent in its maintenance of the wire.

AT&T Wire Pulls Helmet off Rider’s Head

Michaels was traveling on his moped in Ann Arbor when he was flipped off his moped by the AT&T wire. The report says the wire was hanging 4 feet from the ground. Michaels’ helmet was actually pulled off his head by the telecommunications wire. The rider then flipped backwards off his moped onto the pavement. He was unconscious for 15 minutes before paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital. Michaels suffered an injured spinal cord, fractured skull, broken jaw, concussion, crushed windpipe, and has lost much of his hearing due to the accident.

“AT&T was negligent in maintaining its equipment, which resulted in this man’s severe injuries. We are glad the jury has awarded him the compensation he deserves,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
