Mountain Center Accident Victim Wasn’t Wearing Seat Belt

An Indio man was killed Friday in a Mountain Center accident. Eutiquio Ramirez, 48, was driving his Toyota pickup truck eastbound on Highway 74 when the truck went off the road, traveled down an embankment and overturned. Ramirez was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He died at the scene.

Police are investigating the Mountain Center accident and have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.

One thing that certainly was a factor in the crash was his seat belt.

Seat belts are the single most effective way to reduce the risk of death in a crash, yet the seat belt use rate in 2014 was only 87%, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). California has primary seat belt laws—meaning law enforcement may stop your vehicle and issue you a ticket if a driver or passenger is unbelted—which have proven to increase a state’s seat belt use rate by an average of 10%. But even with such laws in place, some people still fail to buckle up.

“Failing to wear a seatbelt is gambling with your life. It’s never a risk any driver should take,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
