NHTSA Twitter Campaign Shames Distracted Drivers

If you text and drive, you might be called out in a new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Twitter campaign. The NHTSA has taken to the social media site to publicly shame those who Tweet about their distracted driving behaviors.

The goal of the campaign, which utilizes the hashtag #justdrive in response to Twitter users who admit to distracted driving, is to curb the texting and driving epidemic.

Despite research pointing to the dangers of distracted driving, smartphone use in vehicles continues to rise. According to the NHTSA, in 2013, 1.7% of drivers were reportedly found texting or otherwise using handheld devices. In 2014, that number increased to 2.2%. Vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers claimed 3,179 lives in 2014, and in the first half of 2015, 8.1% of all traffic fatalities were related to drivers using smartphones.

According to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), the average time your eyes are averted from the road while texting is five seconds. If you’re traveling at 55 mph for those five seconds, you’re blindly driving the length of a football field.

“Hopefully the NHTSA Twitter campaign will help raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and cause some Twitter users to think twice before using their devices behind the wheel,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
