Parents of Actor Killed in Jeep Accident Sue Carmaker

The parents of the actor who was killed in a Jeep Grand Cherokee rollaway accident have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler. Actor Anton Yelchin was killed on June 19th when his parked Jeep came out of gear, rolled backward down his driveway and struck him.

The lawsuit alleges that the vehicle’s gear selector is defective and poorly designed. According to his parents, Yelchin received a safety notice in May about the defect. A week after the fatal rollaway accident, another notice was sent to Yelchin’s home detailing the recall.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has tested the vehicles and determined that the shifters are not intuitive, which increases the potential for selecting the wrong gear. Fiat Chrysler is allegedly speeding up the recall on the affected vehicles—2014-2015 model year Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2012-2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans. So far, the defect has been linked to 266 crashes and 68 injuries. Yelchin’s death is the first fatality linked to the defect.

“Clearly this defect is a serious problem endangering drivers. We hope Fiat Chrysler is quick to address the recall,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
