11-Year-Old Phelan Boy Struck While Riding Bicycle to School

A boy was hospitalized Tuesday after he was struck while riding his bicycle in Phelan. The 11-year-old was biking east on the westbound right shoulder of Phelan Road when he was struck.

Police say 31-year-old Desiree Burns was attempting to turn right onto Phelan Road from Arrowhead Road when her Mercedes struck the bicyclist in the intersection. The boy suffered minor injuries and was taken to Desert Valley Hospital for treatment. The Mercedes driver was not hurt.

According to police, the driver had stopped at the stop sign before making the turn. Drugs or alcohol were not factors in the accident.

Some people think riding against traffic is the correct way to ride a bike, but this is a misconception. It is far safer to ride with the flow of traffic. One study found that bicycling against traffic is three times more dangers than riding with traffic. For kids, that risk increases to seven times greater. It is also against the law to ride your bike against traffic.

“Parents, please take the time to teach your children bicycle safety and make sure they know which side of the road to ride on. This is crucial, especially if your children bike to and from school,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
