A suspect is in custody after he dragged a police officer while trying to flee a traffic stop Thursday afternoon. The deputy pulled over 31-year-old Anderzel Lopez around 4 p.m. Lopez initially cooperated with the traffic stop, but he then panicked and drove away suddenly. The officer was briefly dragged, but he was able to let go and was not injured.

Lopez then crashed his vehicle on Indian Canyon Road near Alejo Road. He fled on foot, leading officers on a search throughout the surrounding area.

Police found the suspect hiding in a tree on a property at Belardo Road and Chino Drive and took him into custody. Lopez has prior convictions for drug-related offenses and failed to appear in court in December after pleading guilty for willful child cruelty and importing controlled substances for sale. He is also wanted for shoplifting by the Palm Springs Police Department. It is not clear what charges he faces for Thursday’s events.

“We’re thankful for our police officers who were able to locate this suspect and take him into custody,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
