Why are Roadside Fatalities at a Record High?

For the first time since 2007, roadside fatalities surpassed 40,000. Last year, 40,200 people died in motor vehicle accidents. This is a 6% increase from 2015 and a 14% rise since 2014, according to the National Safety Council (NSC).

The NSC also reports that 47% of motorists say they are comfortable texting while driving. Another 10% of drivers reported driving drunk. Of those, 43% were involved in a drunk driving crash.

While there was a 3% rise in vehicle miles driven last year, that does not realistically account for the steep increase in roadside fatalities. Distracted driving, driving under the influence, speeding and other risky driving behaviors are the more likely culprits behind the deadly trend.

What can we do to Curb Roadside Fatalities?

The NSC suggests a total ban on mobile device use behind the wheel. This includes “hands-free” systems, as they still require a certain amount of driver attention to operate. Other recommendations include mandatory ignition interlocks for those convicted of driving under the influence, and a three-tiered driver licensing system for drivers under 21.

“We are losing an astounding number of lives to traffic accidents. In our era of high vehicle safety standards and advanced safety technology, this is a travesty. It’s time to crack down on distracted driving and improve safety on our roads,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
