Tips for a Stress-Free Road Trip

Planning a road trip this summer? There are plenty of great places to visit in Southern California (or beyond) that don’t require a plane ticket, and there’s plenty of summer left for a road trip.

If you are considering a road trip this summer, remember to keep safety a priority during your travels. Here are some tips for taking a safe road trip from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS):

  1. Plan your trip in detail. Know the distance, plan out where you’ll make stops for breaks and meals. If your trip is going to take more than one day, be sure to book a hotel in advance so you aren’t left searching for a place to stay at the last minute.
  2. Check the road conditions before you head out. For real time highway conditions, visit www.dot.ca.gov. If you’re using a GPS, it may also be able to show you high-traffic areas on roads and give you alternate routes.
  3. Make sure your vehicle is road trip ready. Check your tires, battery, air conditioning, lights and wipers. If you want to be extra cautious, take your car in for a maintenance inspection before you go to ensure there are no major issues you don’t know about.
  4. Practice good safety habits. Always buckle your seatbelt and make sure everyone else is clicked in before you drive. Ensure that all children are in the appropriate safety seats and that all kids under 12 years old are in the backseat. Unsure whether your child should be in a booster or not? Take the 5-step test at found here.
  5. Focus on the road. As always, don’t text and drive. Try to stay off the phone entirely during your drive and wait to make a call or plug an address into the GPS until you have safely parked your vehicle. Take enough breaks and share driving responsibilities to avoid driving while drowsy. Stop and take a nap at a rest stop if necessary, but never drive while fatigued as you can easily doze off on a long, monotonous drive.

“Road trips are a great way to explore new places or favorite getaways. With gas prices still at a reasonable price and an improving economy, families should be excited to hit the road this summer. Just be sure to take the proper safety precautions to ensure your trip is enjoyable and stress-free,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
