Top 3 Reasons Owners Ignore Vehicle Recalls
Top 3 Reasons Owners Ignore Vehicle Recalls

A national survey conducted by the University of Michigan reveals that many Americans ignore vehicle recalls. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 51 million vehicles were recalled in 2015. Another 34 million vehicle-related parts were also recalled. Yet, according to the survey, some 20% of vehicle owners ignore these recalls.

Why do People Ignore Vehicle Recalls?

Survey respondents identified these 3 main reasons for not responding to their auto recalls:

  1. 38% were worried the dealership would try to sell them additional repairs.
  2. 37% said it would be difficult to give up their vehicle to be repaired.
  3. 36% said the wait to get it fixed was too long.

Respondents also provided options that could increase compliance with vehicle recalls. These included being able to bundle the recall with regularly scheduled maintenance, and incentives like a free oil change.

“In the past year, there have been several serious vehicle recalls, such as exploding Takata airbags and vehicles that can roll away in ‘park.’ It’s vital that owners heed these recalls and bring their vehicles in for repair, regardless of the inconvenience it may cause,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
