An Indio man was killed in a pedestrian accident Thursday night. Police say 68-year-old Rick Ebner was walking along Highway 111 when he was struck by a vehicle. The crash occurred around 7 p.m. near the Kmart in the 81-600 block.

The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with police. Authorities closed eastbound Highway 111 for several hours for the investigation. Police have not released the details of the crash.

A woman was killed in another pedestrian accident Saturday morning in Thermal. Police say a tractor hit a guide wire on Harrison Street, which caused several power lines to fall. A pedestrian was attempting to stop traffic near the downed power lines when the was fatally struck.

The downed power lines caused a fire in the brush and palm trees along Harrison Street before they were deactivated. CalFire contained the fire quickly, but clean-up took roughly five hours. Harrison Street was closed from Avenue 77 to Pierce Street for the investigation.

“While the pedestrian trying to stop traffic was certainly well-intentioned, she put herself in harm’s way by trying to direct traffic near downed power lines. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, it is best to call the police and wait for authorities to come direct traffic,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
