Will Highway Safety Project Reduce Fatalities on I-10?

Caltrans has started work on a highway safety project to hopefully increase safety on the dangerous stretch of I-10 between Coachella and Highway 177. Last year, 12 people died in crashes on this same stretch of highway. This year is on track to be just as deadly. At least 10 people have died along this stretch of roadway so far in 2017.

Caltrans and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials agree that the driver error causes most of these crashes. Statistics certainly support this idea. Nationally, 94% of crashes are caused by driver error, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Caltrans Highway Safety Project Focuses on Safety Near Construction Sites

Caltrans will widen the striping from 4 inches to 6 inches to increase visibility and help drivers stay in their lane. The CHP and Caltrans will also increase enforcement near construction sites. Construction is ongoing along I-10 due to the road rehabilitation project that began last year. They will also increase signage to alert drivers of construction zones. Additionally, they will put out more safety messages to the public and to truck drivers.

“We appreciate the efforts of Caltrans and the CHP to improve safety along this deadly stretch of I-10,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
