ELMIRON® HAS BEEN LINKED TO SERIOUS EYE DAMAGE
The use of the drug Elmiron® has been linked to eye disease and vision damage. If you have ever taken prescription Elmiron®, also know as pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS), you are at risk of developing a progressive eye disease called RETINAL PIGMENTARY MACULOPOTHY. RETINAL PIGMENTARY MACULOPOTHY may be confused with age-related macular degeneration if the proper test is not performed.
What is the Elmiron® Lawsuit about?
Common symptoms for patients experiencing this Elmiron® associated eye disease are:
• Blurred vision (often in the patient’s central field of vision) • Difficulty reading • Dark spots in center of vision • Straight lines that appear curved • Muted, less vivid colors and • Difficulty adapting to dim lighting
What is Elmiron®?
If you have ever taken Elmiron® and have problems in both eyes, you may have the unique retinal injury caused by Elmiron®. In fact, a significant percentage of Elmiron® users in several studies have had Elmiron® associated retinal maculopathy and pigmentary damage. These patients had significant damage to their retina and reported significant eye and vision problems as a result. What is most alarming about Elmiron® eye damage is that eye damage in patients can develop for 10 years after the patient has stopped taking Elmiron®.
What should I do?
Therefore, if you ever taken Elmiron®, it is highly recommended that you see an ophthalmologist and have your eyes examined on an on-going basis. Researchers at Emory University looked at 219 patients, finding “everyone who had pigmentary maculopathy was taking pentosan polysulfate, (ELMIRON®).”
