A driver was killed Sunday in a Desert Center rollover crash. The fatal accident occurred just before 11 a.m. on eastbound I-10, just west of Highway 177. Authorities have identified the victim as 40-year-old Rachel Lopez of Moreno Valley.
Lopez was driving a 2003 Toyota Prius eastbound when the vehicle went off the road. The car then rolled over in the center median. There were four occupants in the vehicle when it crashed, including two minors and a 48-year-old man. The children suffered minor injuries and the adult passenger sustained moderate injuries.
The crash shut down the freeway for 30 minutes for the helicopter to land. Lopez was airlifted to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 12:53 p.m. Police are investigating the crash, but they do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved. All the occupants of the Prius were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
“Our condolences go out to the victim’s family and friends. It’s heartbreaking to hear about yet another fatality along this dangerous stretch of I-10,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
