The former girlfriend of actor Scott Eastwood was killed by a defective Takata airbag. Eastwood, who recently starred in Suicide Squad, says that his girlfriend, 26-year-old Jewel Brangman, was driving her 2001 Honda Civic from San Diego to Los Angeles when she rear-ended a van. According to Honda and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Brangman was killed when the airbag inflated with too much force and sprayed shrapnel at her.
The fatal accident happened in September of 2014. The vehicle, which had been recalled due to to the faulty Takata airbags, was a rental. Brangman’s father filed a wrongful death lawsuit after her death, citing Honda, Takata and the rental car company, Sunset Car Rental of San Diego. At the time, Brangman was the eighth person to die from a defective Takata airbag. There have since been three more deaths linked to the issue.
The Civic Brangman was driving is one of the 30,000 vehicles the NHTSA has cited as high risk for exploding airbags. If you drive one of these vehicles, you should not drive it until the airbags have been replaced by the dealer.
“This woman’s senseless death is just heartbreaking. A rental car company should never rent out vehicles that have been recalled and haven’t been repaired,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
