Alcohol or Drugs Likely Tied to Thermal Pedestrian Accident

A Thermal man was killed in a pedestrian accident Thursday night. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), 59-year-old Jose Zavala was crossing Harrison Street at 66th Avenue when he was struck by a Honda Civic just after 9:30 p.m. The Civic driver, 27-year-old Yuli Olivares Beccera, was traveling north on Harrison Street when he struck Zavala.

The pedestrian was taken to JFK Memorial Hospital, where he passed away about an hour later from his injuries. The Civic driver was not hurt in the pedestrian crash. He was not charged in the accident.

While it’s important for drivers to be aware of pedestrians and practice safe driving habits around them, it’s also crucial for pedestrians to be safe when crossing roads. Read our 7 tips for pedestrian safety for a refresher.

“Pedestrians need to take their safety seriously. If you’re out walking, don’t assume drivers can see you, especially after dark,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
