This week, Desert Hot Springs High School students mourned the loss of senior student Pamela Carrillo, who was fatally struck by a vehicle Saturday night. The teen was walking from a friend’s house to a bus stop on Palm Drive. Carrillo was struck by a vehicle as she crossed Palm Drive at Camino Aventura.
On Tuesday, Carrillo’s mother, Patricia Arellano, appealed to the Desert Hot Springs City Council for changes to be made to improve pedestrian safety in the area. She pleaded with the council, “Don’t wait for one of your kids to be killed” before acting.
Mayor Scott Matas assured Arellano that her words had been heard, and steps would be taken to improve safety. About 20 DHSHS students joined Arellano Tuesday to demand pedestrian safety improvements. One student told the council the nearest crosswalk is too far away from the bus stop, which meant Carrillo had to jaywalk.
Pedestrian Safety Projects Planned for DHS
Pedestrian safety improvements are slated for the city in the coming months. The city plans to add crosswalks, traffic signals and street lights in strategic places along Palm Drive. The area where Carrillo was killed could see improvements completed by the end of summer.
“This student’s death is a tragedy, and we can only hope that improvements to the roads in this area will help prevent another fatal accident,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
