A new report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals elderly drugged driving as a rising issue. According to the study, 78% of senior drivers said they take medication that can cause impairment behind the wheel.
Most older adults have from at least one chronic medical condition, and many have a combination of issues. These might include arthritis, diabetes, heart disease and others. Some chronic conditions might themselves lead to driving impairment. However, it is often the prescription medication used to treat the condition that impairs driving. The elderly are also more at risk of “serious adverse drug events,” such as falling, hallucinations, depression and confusion.
Struggle to Read Labels Could Lead to Elderly Drugged Driving
The problem is compounded when factoring in that 40% of seniors are unable to read their prescription labels, according to the National Council on Patient Information and Education. Many prescription drugs have side effects that are not compatible with driving. However, if the seniors taking these medications have difficulty reading the labels, they might not understand the risks of driving while under the influence.
“If you have an elderly driver in your life who takes any prescription drugs, it’s a good idea to go over the side effects with them so they’re aware of the risks while driving,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
