Infant Sleepers Recalled Due to Risk

Last week, notices were posted on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website detailing a large recall of over 165,000 infant sleepers. According to the recall notice, inclined sleepers produced by Graco, Summer Infant, Evenflo and Delta Children are included due to the fact that they can create lethal suffocation risks for children

For each of the four notices, the description of the risk is nearly identical. When infants roll over on their sides or stomach, suffocation has occurred. It is important to note, however, that the specific inclined sleepers being recalled have not created any fatal events for infants. Instead, these four companies are preemptively recalling these products based on the significant number of fatalities which have occurred when parents place their children in inclined sleepers.

A History of Danger

This is not the first time that inclined sleepers have been recalled. In fact, the largest inclined sleeper recall occurred last April, when Fisher-Price announced that they were recalling over 4.5 million Rock ‘n’ Play sleepers. This particular recall was soon followed by an announcement that 700,000 additional inclined sleepers, this time from the Kids II brand, were also being recalled due to the inherent risk of suffocation created by the design.

Advocates are urging parents to immediately quit using any inclined sleepers with their infants, regardless of the brand in question. For more information about this specific recall or other inclined sleeper recalls which have occurred over the past year, parents are advised to visit the US Consumer Product Safety Commission website.
