A pedestrian was struck and killed on I-10 early Sunday morning in La Quinta. Police say 24-year-old Ramon Gomez was crossing eastbound lanes east of I-10 around 3 a.m. when he was struck by two vehicles. He was first hit by a Chevrolet Astro van, then moments later was struck by a Porsche Boxster. The incident occurred just east of Golf Center Parkway near Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.
Gomez was pronounced dead at 3:11 a.m. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers say both drivers cooperated with authorities, and none of the vehicle occupants were injured. Drugs or alcohol could be a factor in the crash, considering the proximity to the casino. Officials are not sure whether or not Gomez was coming from the casino.
Three lanes on I-10 were closed while police investigated. All lanes were reopened around 6:30 a.m. Anyone with information to aid the investigation can contact the CHP at (760) 772-8911.
