Multiple Companies Issue Granola Recalls Over Listeria Concerns

Several granola recalls have been issued in recent weeks due to Listeria concerns. Last Thursday, Trader Joe’s recalled its Grainless Granola product. The retailer says its supplier informed the company that the granola might have been exposed to Listeria monocytogenes. Trader Joe’s has removed all the affected products from its stores’ shelves. Affected Grainless Granola products have a best by date between March 28, 2018 and April 10, 2018. Customers should either throw the granola away or return them to the store for a full refund.

Last week, two other companies recalled their granola products for possible Listeria contamination. Wildway LLC is recalling several of its products, including Wildway Apple Cinnamon and Wildway Banana Nut grain-free granolas. You can find the full list of products and best by dates here.

New England Natural Bakers has also recalled its organic muesli and granola products. The foods are sold under the Evoke Organic and Millville brand names. The reason for the recall is the same as the other companies—an ingredient supplier alerted the manufacturer of potential Listeria contamination. View the full list of recalled products here.

What are the Symptoms of Listeriosis?

seveConsumers who have these products in their homes should return them to the store where they were purchased for a full refund. Additionally, if you have consumed any of these foods and are experiencing any symptoms of listeriosis, seek immediate medical attention. If you have eaten these products and have not developed any symptoms, you should still monitor yourself for adverse effects, as they can develop several weeks after exposure.

Common symptoms of listeriosis include:

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Severe headache

If the infection worsens and spreads to the nervous system, more severe symptoms can occur, including headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions.

“Listeriosis is especially dangerous for the elderly, children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Be sure to dispose of these potentially contaminated products to avoid infection,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
