Takata Recall Expands: BMW’s Affected

Takata has recently announced that 1.4 million airbag inflators found in BMW 3-series vehicles are now being recalled due to the same issues which have plagued the company since 2013. Considered the largest automotive recall in the history of automobile manufacturing, the Takata airbag inflator recall has affected a diverse collection of car manufacturers and car models. The recall itself is not something to be taken lightly. To date, there have been 24 deaths attributed to the faulty airbags, as well as countless injuries.

Checking Your Vehicle For Recalls

For many automobile owners, these stories conjure up the question, “How do I know if my vehicle has an active recall?” Fortunately, checking for a recall on your vehicle can be accomplished using a few relatively straightforward steps. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration maintains an online platform where users can input their automobile’s VIN number and instantly gain access to all available recall information.

If your vehicle has been listed as part of a recall, your next step should be to contact the local car dealer. The dealer is required by law to address the problems in the recall at no expense to you, the owner. Depending on the situation, you may be able to secure a loaner vehicle during the time in which your automobile is being repaired.

Under no circumstances should you continue to drive your car without addressing the recall. As we have seen with the Takata airbags, ignoring this problem could be a lethal mistake.
