Temporary Lane Creates Serious Road Hazards
Within 24 hours following the introduction of a new temporary lane on the 10 freeway near Cabazon, there have been at least two serious car crashes accoridng to local authorities. In response, the California Highway Patrol has warned drivers to proceed with extreme caution and reduce speed as needed.
In both situations, vehicles collided with short-term construction barriers that had been put in place during the road work occurring as part of the I-10 Pavement Rehabilitation Project. The accidents occurred near the Desert Hills Premium Outlets. Although no injuries have been reported so far, it is essential for drivers remain alert in this area, as these temporary lanes can be quite difficult to see.
Bringing in the Experts
Terri Kasinga, a spokeswoman for Caltrans, has stated that numerous officials have visited the site of the temporary lane and have found no cause for concern with regards to its placement or design. Although the speed limit in the area remains relatively high at 60 mph, this is relatively standard in construction areas such as these.
Drivers are advised to stay current on road closures in this area in order to ensure that they maximize their safety.
