Two Fatal I-10 Crashes Occur Over Holiday Weekend

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating two fatal I-10 crashes that occurred Friday. The first crash happened on eastbound I-10 just east of State Route 177 in Desert Center around 1:35 p.m. According to police logs, a vehicle went off the right side of the freeway. The car then crashed through a fence.

The driver, 66-year-old Roberto Estrada of San Jose, died at the scene. A second occupant was hospitalized for moderate injuries. Officers have not yet released the cause of the fatal crash.

The second accident occurred on westbound I-10 east of Hayfield Road in Chiriaco Summit at 8:13 p.m. Police say that vehicle also ran off the freeway. Three people were injured in the crash. One of the patients was severely injured and was airlifted to the hospital. The two others suffered moderate injuries in the crash. They were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Around 11 p.m., police reported 17-year-old Erick Rodriguez Leyva of Phoenix had died from his injuries.

It is not yet clear what caused these accidents. The CHP is investigating the two fatal I-10 crashes.
