Woman Sues Cuisinart Over Exploding Pressure Cooker

A South Dakota woman has filed a lawsuit against Cuisinart, alleging the company’s pressure cooker exploded and burned her. The class action suit was filed by Shelly Wicklund in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut.

Wicklund’s lawsuit claims that the Cuisinart Model Number CPC-600 pressure cooker and similar models are defective. The lids can explosively separate from the cooker, causing the hot contents to burn consumers. In March 2016, Wicklund was using the pressure cooker to make chili when the product signaled that cooking was completed. However, the cooker was still pressurized, and it exploded hot chili on Wicklund, burning her arms, chest, neck and face.

The defect, the lawsuit claims, lies in the pressure cooker’s lid-locking mechanism. According to Wicklund’s suit, the device’s manual claims you should not be able to open the locked lid after beginning the cooking process. However, this is not the case, as Wicklund was able to open the lid when the device was still pressurized. Moreover, she claims Cuisinart was aware of or should have discovered the defect during testing, and failed to disclose the danger to consumers.
