Elderly Man Dies in Palm Springs Light Pole Crash

A Desert Hot Springs man died Monday after his vehicle crashed into a light pole near the Palm Springs Air Museum. The fatal accident occurred at 5:46 p.m. on the 700 block of Gene Autry Trail. According to police 83-year-old John Cheatham became trapped in his vehicle after he crashed into the light pole.

Firefighters extricated Cheatham from the crushed vehicle. He was then taken by ambulance to a hospital. Police confirmed Cheatham passed away from his injuries about 15 minutes later.

Light Pole Crash Shuts Down Gene Autry Trail for 5 Hours

Police closed Gene Autry Trail from Escena Way to Tachevah Drive. The road reopened around 10 p.m. It is unknown what caused the fatal collision or if there were other vehicles involved. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash should contact the Palm Springs Police Department at (760) 323-8116.
