A man was fatally struck in Thermal Sunday while he was trying to move his crashed vehicle from the roadway. Authorities have identified the victim as 23-year-old Jesus Arellano-Rodriguez of Thermal. The fatal accident occurred around 3:50 a.m. Sunday at Johnson Street and Avenue 60.
According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), Arellano-Rodriguez was driving his Ford Focus north on Johnson Street when he attempted a lefthand turn onto Avenue 60. For unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a water tower.
Arellano-Rodriguez left the scene, then was driven back to his vehicle by his friend, 22-year-old Daniel Bernal. The two were attempting to tow the Ford Focus when Bernal lost control of the vehicle. The Focus came to a stop on northbound Johnson Street. That’s when an oncoming Jeep Laredo crashed into Arellano-Rodriguez and his vehicle. Arellano-Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene just after 4 a.m.
According to CHP investigators, the driver of the Jeep could not see the Focus because its headlights were off. Two people at the scene also suffered minor injuries, but Cal Fire did not state who those people were. However, Bernal was arrested for driving under the influence and was released after posting bail.
“Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones. If you are involved in a crash, always call the police to the scene. Don’t risk your life by trying to handle the situation yourself,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
