Drowsy driving is a significant danger on U.S. roadways. In fact, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates that roughly one in six fatal crashes involves a fatigued driver. And the risk associated with drowsy driving has been equated to that of driving under the influence. This risk is of particular concern to truck drivers, who spend long hours behind the wheel of commercial vehicles.
The Benefit of Rest Stops
A new study shows that rest stops help to reduce the number of drowsy driving crashes involving truck drivers. The study, conducted by the University of Kentucky, found that crashes caused by drivers of commercial vehicles were more likely to occur on roads where the nearest rest stop was 20 or more miles away.
The study suggests that more rest stops may lead to increased road safety. This brings to light the troubling reality that highway way rest stops are disappearing. According to USA Today, transportation agencies are shutting down these traditional rest stops to save money.
“If the research shows that rest stops increase safety, it is imperative that state transportation departments take this into consideration before closing down these safety stops,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
