Robocall Kingpin Fined $120 Million for Fraudulent Calls

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued its largest ever fine against a man dubbed the “Robocall kingpin.” Adrian Abramovich of Miami, Florida, faces a $120 million fine for posing a threat to public safety by placing millions of illegal robocalls.

Abramovich allegedly made 96 million robocalls over three months in 2016. The calls were offering discounted travel services, claiming affiliation with Expedia, Marriott, Hilton and TripAdvisor. According to the FCC, the illegal calls were part of a fraudulent scheme that had nothing to do with the companies mentioned.

The FCC’s complaint, issued last year, accuses the robocaller of “neighbor spoofing”—using a local call-back number to make the caller appear local. The FCC also claims that Abramovich “tarnished the good will” of the companies he claimed to be affiliated with. Moreover, the calls did not just go to cell phones and landlines, but they also went to emergency phone lines used by hospitals.

Is Robocalling Illegal?

The FCC considers robocalls—automated telemarketing calls made without the approval of the recipient—to be illegal. Unfortunately, billions of robocalls are made every year. In fact, 3.4 billion were made just in April this year, and robocalls are the No. 1 complaint the FCC receives from consumers.

“Consumers are tired of receiving fraudulent and invasive robocalls. Hopefully this significant fine will deter other telemarketers from following suit,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
