Bump and Grind Hikers Rescued During Day of Extreme Heat

Two hikers were rescued from the Bump and Grind Trail in Palm Desert on Monday morning during the near record-breaking heat wave. The hikers requested help around 9 a.m., when temperatures were up around 104 degrees. Firefighters found the hikers about one mile up the Bump and Grind Trail and assisted them to safety. They could not be airlifted, as weather prevented the use of helicopters.

Twenty-five firefighters were involved in the Palm Desert trail rescue effort, and both hikers were rushed to the hospital with heat-related injuries. The Coachella Valley was under an excessive heat warning  Monday for reaching rare and dangerous temperatures.

Heat exhaustion is a serious danger to desert hikers during these hot summer months. The best way to prevent it is to stay off the trails when the temperatures are going to be in the triple digits. The danger simply is not worth the risk when it is that hot.

Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and seek immediate attention if you begin to exhibit them. Common signs of heat exhaustion include:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Fainting
  • Confusion
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Excessive sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Pale skin

If untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which can be fatal.

“With the excessively hot temperatures, it’s best to stay away from the hiking trails and other strenuous outdoor activities to avoid these life-threatening conditions,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
