Distracted driving is often caused by technology–but some companies are actually looking to use technology to slow the distracted driving epidemic. There are several technologies that have been recently developed that are geared to eliminate distractions from the driver’s devices and reduce the risk of accidents.
Katasi, a Colorado-based company, has created a device called Groove to help limit distractions while you drive. The device plugs into your vehicle and connects your device to the cloud, which allows your mobile provider to know when you are driving. The provider will then block ingoing and outgoing emails, texts and social updates while you are driving. Anyone who texts you will get a notification that you are driving. The device is currently in the pilot program stage and will need cooperation from wireless carriers to be able to launch.
A similar technology is available from a Louisiana-based company called Cellcontrol. Their technology, Drive ID, blocks incoming and outgoing texts and social network updates. The device is mounted on the windshield and the user downloads an app on their phone. What is unique about this technology is that it creates zones in the car, so it can tell where in the vehicle a phone user is—meaning that it can restrict the driver’s communication without shutting it down for any of the passengers. This technology is available now for $129.
The National Safety Council (NSC) surveyed 2,400 drivers to get their opinion on distraction-blocking technologies. Fifty-five percent of drivers said they would use the technology to avoid being distracted while driving, while 23% admitted they would likely deactivate the technology.
“We love seeing these companies find innovative ways to combat distracted driving. Hopefully these devices will be in everyone’s vehicles in the near future,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
