NHTSA and CHP Combat Drunk Driving During the Holidays

As families take to the roadways for holiday travel, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and local authorities are working to stop drunk driving. The NHTSA has launched its Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which includes advertisements to deter drunk driving and an interactive website that allows users to experience the consequences of drinking and driving.

The NHTSA is also promoting technology to help fight drunk driving. The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) is a device for vehicles that passively detects a driver’s blood alcohol concentration and prevents them from driving if they are past the legal limit.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will have its maximum enforcement period from 6 p.m. on Friday, December 23 through 11:59 p.m. Monday, December 26. Officers will be on the lookout for drivers who are speeding, driving distracted and driving under the influence.

During last year’s maximum enforcement period, 35 people died in traffic accidents. The CHP arrested 700 motorists for driving under the influence. According to the NHTSA, nearly one in three traffic fatalities involve an impaired driver or speeding.

“Hopefully these initiatives will help curb the recent upward trend in traffic fatalities and keep drunk drivers off the road,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
