A mother and young child perished in a Chiriaco Summit crash Monday. The fatal accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on westbound I-10 just east of Box Canyon Road. Both victims were ejected from the vehicle in the accident.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a dark colored SUV was traveling on the roadway when its left rear tire blew out. The driver lost control of the SUV and drove off the roadway. The vehicle then rolled multiple times, ejecting the woman and child. They died at the scene.

The male driver, presumably the father, suffered major injuries. A 5-month-old girl in the vehicle was also seriously injured. Both are being treated at Riverside University Health System.

Chiriaco Summit Crash Occurs in Area where Crashes are on the Rise

The CHP continues to investigate the fatal Chiriaco Summit crash. The collision occurred along the same stretch of interstate that has seen a significant rise in crashes in recent months. Just last week, a big rig crashed into a pillar underneath the Box Canyon Road overpass.

“We’re heartbroken for the family that lost their loved ones in this accident. Seat belts save lives, and sadly the victims of this crash were not buckled up,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
